Asbestos related diseases include a variety of industrial diseases caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that was used greatly as a heat and fire resistance insulating material which was also used in break linings and gaskets.
Types of asbestos induced the following industrial diseases
1. Asbestosis
This condition involves scarring of the lungs which progresses even when exposure to asbestos is discontinued. It can cause breathlessness and a dry cough which can leave a significant disability which can be fatal.
Asbestosis develops in people who have been heavily exposed to asbestos, such as miners, workers in asbestos factories, and workers who handle building and insulation materials. The period from first exposure to development of the disease is rarely less than 10 years and is usually much longer. Asbestosis increases the risk of developing lung cancer. Asbestosis is a prescribed disease entitling the sufferer to industrial injury benefit.
2. Mesothelioma
This is a malignant tumour often of the membrane that surrounds the lungs which causes pain and breathlessness. In most cases it leads to significant disability. The average interval between the first exposure to asbestos and death is between 20 and 30 years. Mesothelioma is a prescribed disease entitling the sufferer to industrial injury benefit.
3. bilateral diffuse pleural thickening
This condition restricts the ability of the lungs to expand resulting in shortness of breath and may develop even after short expose to asbestos and again it is a prescribed disease. If lung cancer develops this is considered attributable to the asbestos exposure for the purpose of industrial injury benefit.
4. Plaques
These are areas of thickening confined to the outer membrane that surrounds the lungs. The condition rarely causes symptoms or disability but are detected by x-rays. The plaques usually occur in people who have had substantial expose to asbestos although detection does not normally take place until 20 or more years after first exposure. Plaques can sometimes appear after only a short duration of exposure. The condition does not qualify the sufferer for industrial injury benefit.
