New work safety initiative welcomed

19th February 2010

A new Health and Safety Executive initiative to help improve safety in the workplace has been welcomed by leading accident specialists.

The 'Shattered Lives' programme has been launched to help reduce the numbers of falls from height, slips and trips that occur in the workplace, which contribute to the estimated five hundred and fifty eight million pounds a year employees lose each year in reduced income and additional expenditure.

"Since 2001, an average of 50 people in Great Britain have died each year as a result of a fall from height, with a further 8,700 suffering serious injury," said Karl Tonks, a workplace accident specialist with Fentons Solicitors LLP. "This is a horrifying number, and the move by the HSE to address this issue is a welcome one.

The Shattered Lives programme also features guidance and instructions to help reduce the number of trips and slips that occur in the workplace.

"While accidents like these are often perceived as trivial, in reality a high proportion of slips and trips can involve serious injury, with around 95% of major slips resulting in broken bones.

"All employers owe a duty of care to ensure the safety of their employees," he said. "If the help and guidance now available as part of the HSE's programme can help to ensure more employees address this issue and improve the safety of their workforce, then that can only be a good thing."
