Mercedes recalls thousands of cars in UK

11th October 2010

Mercedes-Benz has become the latest car manufacturer this year to issue a recall over safety fears, with more than 20,000 cars in the UK being affected by a potential power-steering problem.

Sam Harmel, a defective product expert with Fentons Solicitors LLP, said that of the 85,000 Mercedes cars being recalled globally, 22,355 were in the UK. "Reports state that the C-Class saloon and estate models, and E-Class saloon, estate, coupe and convertible models built between June 2009 and February 2010, could all potentially suffer the problem, which involves power-steering fluid being lost from the system," said Sam.

"Thankfully there have been no reported accidents or incidents, but Mercedes-Benz is clearly taking this very seriously," said Sam, a partner with the firm. "Owners have been written to and are being urged to get in touch with their local dealer to have their vehicles examined."

Sam said the car manufacturer has pointed out that a simple 30 minute repair - which involves tightening a nut within the steering pump - can fix the problem.

"The company has said this move is purely a precautionary matter, but obviously in the wake of recent recalls affecting UK motorists - particularly the BMW and Toyota issues from earlier this year - it is better to pre-empt any problem," he said.
