Hearing loss claim due to no hearing protection

19th February 2008

A 58 year old Rotherham man received £3750 in damages after he suffered some hearing loss & tinnitus as a result of working in the steel industry. Our Client was employed by what was then British Steel, now Corus from 1966 to 1982. He worked for 11 years in the Templeboro Bar Mill, Rotherham, on the hand mill, feeding steel into various types of rolls. Our Client then moved to work for 5 years to the Wide Strip Department at Shepcote Lane, Sheffield, working on the softening and descaling lines. The working environment was very noisy and our Client was exposed to continuous noise not only from his own work, but from work colleagues working in his vicinity. At the time our Client worked at the steel works, he should have been provided with hearing protection when exposed to noise over 90 decibels. Despite this, our Client was not provided with any hearing protection until the last 2 to 3 years of his employment, even then the hearing protection was not always available.

Susan Dawson, a Solicitor at Fentons Solicitors, acted for the claimant.
