Damages win after eye injury at work

16th March 2011

A former painter and decorator who was nearly blinded in one eye after an accident at work, has been awarded £100,000 in compensation.

John Reeder, a personal injury expert at Fentons Solicitors LLP, said: "My client, who was carrying out decorating work at a department store in London at the time of the incident, had previously consulted three other firms but none were willing to take on his claim.

"A piece of specialist decorating equipment - a long-handled, extendable brush - that had been left unlocked, suddenly opened and extended, striking my client in the left eye with substantial force."

The 35-year-old man was rushed to hospital having sustained a fracture to the orbital floor and medial wall of his left eye socket, as well as a laceration to his eyelid and a severe ocular contusion injury to his iris, known as iridodialysis.

"This was not a straightforward claim," said John, a partner with the firm, "but my client sustained a very nasty injury and it was only right that his claim should have been investigated. Thankfully, doctors were able to save my client's eye and restore some of his vision. To date he has undergone four operations on his injured eye as well as numerous smaller procedures. In addition, he has also suffered a significant amount of lost earnings as a result."

In March 2011, John settled the claim on behalf of his client for the gross sum of £100,000.
