Car passenger receives £600,000 after serious head injury

18th November 2009

A man who suffered serious head injuries when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a collision with a lorry, has been awarded £600,000 in damages.

Fentons Solicitors associate Joanna Bailey, who represented the man, said his injuries - both physical and psychological - would unfortunately affect him for the rest of his life.

"The consequences of a head injury are not just immediate," said Joanna, a road traffic accident specialist. "Although obviously he suffered trauma and pain at the time of the incident, the long-term devastation caused by such an injury is something he has to deal with every single day."

The man, who was in his mid-20s at the time of the incident, suffered a catalogue of physical injuries, but by far the most serious was his brain injury.

"This was a young man who was in the prime of his life, looking forward to an independent future," said Joanna. "The accident has taken this away. Instead, this man must now try to cope with a transformation of his personality.

"He is now withdrawn and struggles socially - even with his own family. He also suffers anxiety when travelling in cars," she said, "and his medication leaves him experiencing sleeplessness and angry outbursts over which he has no control, making the possibility of returning to work very poor."

Following a lengthy legal battle, Joanna successfully negotiated a settlement totalling £600,000.
