Toyota problems could lead to UK compensation claims

9 February 2010

A legal expert specialising in defective product cases has said that mounting concerns over the safety of some Toyota vehicles could lead to compensation claims in the UK.

Following recent fears concerning the accelerator pedal on a number of the Japanese car giant's cars, the eco-friendly Prius hybrid model is now facing a recall amidst an investigation into claims that there is a problem with the braking system.

"The accelerator concerns were being discussed for some time before Toyota took decisive action, but this new recall would seem to suggest the Prius issue is so serious that it is being investigated immediately," said Sam Harmel, defective product specialist with Fentons Solicitors LLP.

"We have already spoken with one client who believes a problem with his car's brake system led to him suffering injury in an accident, and the chances are he is not the only one affected by issues such as these."

Toyota has already addressed concerns by recalling almost eight million vehicles worldwide - more than 180,000 of the 1.8 million cars recalled across Europe are in the UK. The seven models being recalled in Europe are the Aygo, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, and Avensis, and cover manufacturing dates going back to February 2005. The recall of the 2010 Prius and two other hybrids will affect 437,000 cars across the world, and around 8,500 in the UK.

"The investigations are likely to go on for several months," said Sam, a partner with the firm. "But the likelihood is that there will be a number of people who feel they have been involved in an accident as a direct result of these issues. If that is found to be the case, they could make a claim for compensation."
