New motorcycle helmet could help reduce serious injury

16 February 2010

A revolutionary crash helmet set to save thousands of lives has been welcomed by a motorcycle accident specialist.

Andrew Young, partner with Fentons Solicitors, said he was hopeful that the innovative new helmet - designed by a retired GP - would help to significantly reduce the number of serious injuries motorcyclists suffer each year.

The news "SuperSkin" helmet is covered in synthetic skin that swivels on impact, absorbing forces which rotate the brain in a crash - the biggest cause of death in motorcyclists.

"Nearly 500 motorcyclists and passengers die each year in the UK," said Andrew, who specialises in compensation claims for motorcycle accident victims. "With more than 5,000 seriously injured as well, an invention like this will hopefully reduce those numbers and help prevent such serious and life-threatening injuries."

The helmet's inventor Dr Ken Phillips got his inspiration from the human scalp. He said: "I realised the scalp is a really important part of brain protection. If you hit your head the scalp slides over the skull.

"Energy is absorbed by compression of the scalp and what we call rotational acceleration is taken up by movement of the scalp. So I decided to see how this could apply to helmets."

Tests by the UK's Transport Research Laboratory and at the University of Strasbourg in France show it can reduce rotational impact by 50%. And it can cut the subsequent possibility of brain damage by nearly 70%.

"This is a welcome advance in motorcycle helmet safety," said Andrew Young. "Hopefully we will soon start to see the number of people seriously or fatally injured in motorcycle accidents begin to fall."

The first SuperSkin model for bikers has just launched in the UK.
