HSE ADVICE FOR CLEANING COMPANIES IN ESSEX TO REDUCE SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS

21 September 2007

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities across Essex are targeting cleaning companies in the county to help manage the risk of slips, trips and falls in the workplace.

A free seminar taking place at Chelmsford County Hall on Monday 24 September aims to raise awareness on the dangers of incorrect floor cleaning regimes that lead to slip and trip accidents.

This is one of a series of half-day seminars HSE is holding across the country. These seminars are aimed at managers, supervisors, cleaning staff and representatives who work in the cleaning industry.

The seminars will give attendees an opportunities to learn more about:

* the importance of floor cleaning;
* what can be done to prevent slips and trips;
* contamination control.

Mark Jordan HSE inspector said:

"Slips, trips and falls are a big issue for all businesses, but particularly for those operating in the service sector. Each year over a third of all major injuries reported nationally are the result of slips, trips and falls, with 95% resulting in broken bones.

"The cost to employers is over £512 million a year, with the cost to the health service a further £133 million a year. This event will provide companies with effective solutions to avoid the risks and hazards, which can arise from lack of thought and preparation."
