Holidaymakers burnt-swimming sue tour operators

17 January 2008

More than 50 holidaymakers are to sue tour operators for severe burns suspected to be caused by the chemical contamination of a five star hotel's pool.

Legal cases are being persued against Thomas Cook Tour Operations Limited, First Choice holidays and Flights Limited, after guests sustained burns from a contaminated swimming pool at the Roda Beach Hotel Corfu, leaving them with excrutiating pain, soreness and shedding of skin.

One of the cases is that of Glen Thurlow and his son Mark who swam in the pool on arrival at the hotel after they had been reassured at their welcome meeting that despite previous problems with the pool it had been tested and was safe to use.

Mr Thurlow said: "I am furious that my family where put in a position to sustain such injuries"

"There are suspicions that the swimming pool was contaminated with chemicals and that this caused the injuries to my family and other holidaymakers, quite how the contamination occurred remains a mystery but obviously it is a matter of great concern."

The family's lawyer Jenny Brooks said:

"We expect Thomas Cook to admit liability and provide substantial interim payments of damages to the Thurlow family and the rest of our clients."
