Fentons Solicitors has welcomed the launch of a new campaign to help prevent the number of deaths and serious injuries in the UK caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
The Health and Safety Executive this week announced that 15 people lost their lives last year and 234 more suffered major injury after being poisoned by carbon monoxide. To increase awareness of the dangers of this silent killer - particularly those faced by tenants in rented accommodation, such as students and young families - the HSE has launched the 'Will you wake up?' campaign.
Martin James, a partner with personal injury specialists Fentons Solicitors, welcomed the launch of the campaign.
"Carbon monoxide poisoning is all too common, and it's important that people are made aware of the dangers," he said. "You can ensure that you are protecting yourself and your family by installing a carbon monoxide alarm. If you already have one fitted, make sure you test that the battery is working on a regular basis, just as you would with a smoke alarm."
Martin said anyone living in rented accommodation should ensure that all gas equipment is checked. "Your landlord has to have any gas appliance that they own regularly maintained by a Gas Safe Registered engineer," he said. "You should then be issued with your own copy of the gas safety certificate following the annual safety check."
