Argos has withdrawn a line of furniture from its stores after customers complained of burning and sores when they sat on items from the range.
The firm said the "very small" number of incidents may be linked to the leather covering on some of the Pia & Bari pieces bought in its stores.
The furniture had been made with leather from a specific tannery over a nine week period, Argos said.
It was possible customers had suffered an allergic reaction, it added.
'Acted appropriately'
Argos said that it had withdrawn the items while the investigation was underway and that it was trying to contact customers who had bought the affected items.
"This issue relates to a very small proportion of the Pia and Bari furniture we have sold, which, in turn, represents a very small level of our upholstery sales," Argos said.
"But the health and safety of our customers is our top priority and we have been working closely with a range of experts who have been advising us on the appropriate course of action.
"The issue has been thoroughly investigated and the relevant authorities have been notified.
"The experts we have consulted have confirmed that they believe that Argos has acted appropriately in the circumstances."
